 Communication, Collaboration, & Rapport

The primary role of a teacher is to help students learn, however, children feel valued if teachers also care about their well-being. Teachers should aim to nurture a positive relationship between them and their students as this relationship may leave a long lasting impression on the student’s lives. It is important for the student to have a sense of belonging where they can confidently participate in the activities at school.

Siu Ming becoming quiet and withdrawn may be due to the fact that he lost his sense of belonging due to academic or personal challenges he is facing.

Stanford University (n.d.). would like us to consider that teacher-student relationships and one-on-one conversations is an important aspect of teaching and that these interactions should be positive. They further suggest that teachers should take time to meet with students who are struggling as they may have academic and or personal problems that could be discussed or resolved together.

Stanford University (n.d.) states that teachers should offer support and express concern for the student, and at times a teacher might feel the need to informally counsel students, or refer them to see a counsellor.

Siu Ming’s teacher ought to have a one-on-one discussion with the student about participation as an important element of learning. Siu Ming teacher should aim to show compassion towards the student and whatever their challenges might be.  The teacher must discuss consequences of low participation and low grades of report cards and allow the student to opt for a behaviour change. This idea is also supported by Stanford University (n.d.) stating that a student is best at generating their own plan of action.

Further to the above, closer monitoring of both participation and task completion is necessary and involvement of the principal and parent.

According to Hue, M. & Li, W. (2008), parents play an important role in the educational setting whereby communication with their child’s teacher is of extreme importance as parents have a strong influence on their child’s learning and behaviour.

A two-way communication with teachers and parents is very important, as they share a common goal, their child’s education.

Thoughtco. (n.d). mention that teachers do not always get along with all types of parents, however, teachers can opt to ‘Fake It When Necessary’. Often, teachers and parents have personality differences and at times just don’t get along. By avoiding these parents is simply not ideal, and they suggest that teachers might have to ‘grin and bear it’. Keeping in mind that the student will ultimately benefit from these types of ‘positive’ interactions between you and the parent.

Our teachers believe that they and the parents share a common goal, and that the key to effective communication with parents is through transparency. This allows our students and parents to learn the importance of their responsibilities, expectations and ultimately their child’s educational path.
